The forage triticale, or simply triticale, it's a highly versatile forage, used for grazing and for many other uses related to its livestock. In summary, and subject to the due simplifications, the triticale is a cross between wheat and rye, and is an excellent forage for many animals, such as dairy cows, beef cows, and much more.

The reasons for this wide use preferred to the forage triticale is well known: this substance contains in fact a high level of protein, high digestibility and a significantly higher yield than other cereals.

Why use triticale

From the above it should be clear enough that the triticale could represent a very good opportunity to be able to support the fodder stocks. With many early harvests facing drought conditions, in other words, this could be the ideal time to consider planting triticale and thus support their supplies.

Increasingly agricultural consultants on the other hand, they appreciate the yield potential and the quality of the forage that triticale has to offer. However, it is good to remember that all these advantages must always be evaluated by observing, on the other side of the scale, some characteristics of awareness, such as the fact that the time and attention to detail that are necessary to fully realize all the benefits of the crop may discourage some growers.

Just to allow all those interested to get the most out of triticale, below we wanted to share with you a series of tips that will allow you to get a fantastic harvest.

Let's see them together, one by one.

Buy quality seeds

Always buy quality seeds, from certified plants. This way you will invest in seeds that will sprout and produce high yields. Therefore, stay away from unknown qualities of seeds, which could have a very poor yield and, consequently, compromise all your efforts to achieve a good harvest.

Plant the seeds early

As we have already mentioned a few lines ago, the triticale requires the respect of some times details to get the best out of your crop.

In particular, agricultural consultants recommend sowing triticale 10 to 14 days before the local winter wheat sowing date. This will ensure you the maximum capacity in the tillering of the plant and the highest yield potential. This is a fundamental precaution especially in the northern regions, where the climate is more rigid.

In other words, rather than planting more seeds, plant fewer seeds but sooner! Planting more seeds late will not increase your yield, it will only waste your time and money. Which, we imagine, you certainly don't want to do!

Not only. The list of advantages deriving from early sowing is in fact much deeper and more extensive. For example, larger seedlings will take up more nitrogen, which will help increase the number of drop drills, with the potential to reduce the amount of nitrogen applied in spring. In addition, the first triticale plants are also more resistant to molds, since stagnant water will cover less "part" of the plant.

Apply nitrogen

Apply nitrogen, preferably incorporating manure before sowing. It may also be useful to apply additional nitrogen for subsequent seedlings.

Sow at the right depth

Sow 3 centimeters deep. If yours is a particularly extensive cultivation, and therefore you want to proceed with a more appropriate sowing with automatic machines, therefore set your seeding machine at this depth. Compliance with this depth guarantees a much higher probability of success. In particular, sowing at this depth makes plants less likely to rise above the ground during spring. Adequate placement of seeds also increases the chances of reaching maximum potential yields at the right time.

We hope, with this brief introduction, we have provided you with some useful ideas to start evaluating a cultivation of triticale. We talked about its many advantages and some particularities that you should respect in order to get the best from this crop. If you want more information, such as the characteristics of the land in which you should be sowing, we naturally recommend that you speak to an expert agricultural consultant who can support you in this task.
