Maintaining agricultural biodiversity for thousands of years has been one of the factors that allowed farmers around the world and in Misiones to ensure their productive independence and the food sovereignty of their communities.

We citizens, peasants, producers of family agriculture, students, health workers of the Province of Misiones, members of the organizations and movements that subscribe, before the announcement that the Secretariat of Family Agriculture, Coordination and Territorial Development dependent on The Secretariat of Agroindustry of the Nation and the Argentine Maize and Sorgo Association (Maizar), signed an agreement to develop the cultivation of transgenic maize, of high productivity in Misiones and in the Northeast of Corrientes, with the objective of producing and exporting -from these territories- more than 1,000,000 tons to Brazil.

We strongly reject this project that puts at risk the already threatened biodiversity of native and creole seeds of the province of Misiones and the region, as well as food sovereignty.

The recent law 27494 of the Nation, promulgated on December 5, 2018 that declares the Province of Misiones as "National Capital of Biodiversity" as a result of the efforts of the missionary society and government agencies to preserve natural assets. has been fatally injured due to the confirmation and progress of the Project of transgenic corn crops in 7 localities of the Province without prior participation of the citizens and not taking into account the provincial law for the Promotion of Agroecological Production (Law VIII-N ° 68 - promulgated 10/16/2014) and neither the provincial law prohibiting glyphosate (Law XVI- N ° 124 - sanctioned on 10/18/2018)

When the UN, the highest international diplomacy body, adopts on Monday, December 17, 2018, in New York, the “Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and other people who work in rural areas”, it takes an unprecedented measure and recognizes a series of rights for the popular sectors of the countryside, claiming the fundamental role of family farming to combat hunger, questioning agrochemicals, defending the right to protect seeds (in the face of privatization attempts), and highlighting the Necessity of food sovereignty, we in the province see our sovereignty threatened and our rights overwhelmed, in the face of this attempt to officially introduce transgenic seeds.

We oppose this project because:

  • Transgenic seeds are part of a production model that directly attacks biodiversity, destroys and poisons the soil, water, air and consequently puts the health of animals at risk. of plants and people.
  • It prevents the right of the population to have a safe and supportive healthy diet. That is why it is necessary to apply, in this case, the precautionary principle (Rio Declaration 1992)
  • Transgenic corn in the Province destroys the production model with a focus on agroecology since both models are incompatible. Once a GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) is released into the environment it is impossible to remove it or prevent its spread. Coexistence between variety maize and transgenic maize is not possible since the latter contaminates them.
  • The cultivation of transgenics brings with it a technological package, which benefits only large corporations, since it requires the use of large amounts of pesticides, such as glyphosate, among others.
  • Glyphosate is classified as a probable carcinogen by the IARC, (International Agency for Research on Cancer under the World Health Organization). There is no doubt about the great impact that it brings on the deterioration of health and quality of life, with the great increase in cancer, lymphomas, hypothyroidism, spontaneous abortions, malformations, verified in several investigations carried out in the regions or provinces where they are used these poisons for monocultures.
  • This proposal further aggravates the environmental deterioration that we have, since it will require the clearing of thousands of hectares of jungle.
  • The province of missions has a recognized history in the region and in the country of recovery of Creole corn in the hands of producers and programs / institutions that have accompanied them. That is why we need financial support to promote production with local seeds, with management from agricultural families. Allowing the implantation of transgenic corn implies total dependence on the large corporations that market this corn seed.

So that we deserve to continue being “The National Capital of Biodiversity:

We urge all missionaries, municipal governments, deliberative councils, the Provincial government not to be overwhelmed, not to remain silent, to defend native and creole seeds, to defend biodiversity, water, land, and agroecology as proposal of a productive model to fight for food sovereignty and for the health of all.

"The heritage seeds of the peoples at the service of humanity", and must continue to be in the hands of farmers and not large corporations.
